EMIN ONAT: FOUNDER AND ARCHITECT   | Founder

Head teacher of architecture.
Onat was an important pioneer in the history of the process of building up architectural education in Turkey.
His identity in this respect even surpasses his identity as an architect in the long run.

He was chosen among 6 foreign men of science and art to be awarded an honorary doctorate on the 125th anniversary of the Hanover Technical High School.
He entered parliament as representative for Istanbul with the general hope of institutionalising and developing the profession of architecture and the specific hope of obtaining broader and more constructive possibilities for İTÜ. However, when it appeared that there was neither the basis nor the possibility for realising his expectations he resigned in 1957 and returned to the University. 06.12.1957. Under the law numbered 114 and dated 28th October 1960 issued by the National Unity Administration founded on 27th May, 1960, he was removed from his post at the İTÜ Faculty of Architecture.
It was a matter that distressed him greatly. On 17th July, 1961, he passed away as a result of a heart attack. He was laid to rest in the family graveyard in Zincirlikuyu. He lies in the grave designed by his student, Doğan Tekeli, winner of the competition opened by İTÜ and the Chamber of Architects.
