Onat was an important pioneer in the history of the process of building up architectural education in Turkey. His identity in this respect even surpasses his identity as an architect in the long run.
The early years are known to have been difficult. The programme at the School of Engineering differed greatly from the Zurich ETH model, and this must have made it difficult for him to adapt to the change. On February 2nd, 1934, Onat was appointed as assistant professor to the Construction Department of the High School of Engineering, which came into operation in 1934. He began his academic career working with Prof. Debbs, who was one of the establishment’s permanent professors of the time.
On January 1st, 1937, he was appointed Assistant Professor of Architecture Classes.
He was among those who believed that architecture should be a branch in its own right rather than being a side branch of structural engineering. And that it was necessary to set up a modern education system in place of the Beaux-Arts model proposed by Prof. Debbe. Things needed doing. Learning, thinking, designing and doing. A young, energetic and productive staff was to be established, discreetly. The march would be a long one.
