ARCHITECT KEMALEDDIN: A LIFE AT ONE OF HISTORY'S TURNING POINTS (1870-1927) |
1911Kamer Hatun Mosque Beyoglu
The mosque of Kamer Hatun, wet nurse of Selim III, that suffered damage in the 1871 Beyoğlu fire was redesigned by Kemaleddin Bey in 1911-1914.
Kemaleddin Bey’s refined design brings together the traditional programme and ground conditions, whilst evaluating the minaret and mihrab as plastic elements. The painstakingly worked surface texture of the mosque made it stand out in an area with a high density of structures before the clearance to build Tarlabası Caddesi( a broad avenue). After the demolitions, its design lost all connections with the environment and it stands as a lone abstract entity.
