ARCHITECT KEMALEDDIN: A LIFE AT ONE OF HISTORY'S TURNING POINTS (1870-1927) |
13 July 1927
On 12th July 1927, he died of a cerebral haemorrhage at the age of 57 in the room he was staying in on the construction site of the Ankara Palace. His mortal remains were sent to Istanbul in a privately allocated car. In spite of his wish to be interred in the Tomb of Mimar Sinan next to Architect Talat Bey, whom he greatly respected, on the wishes of his family he was given a ceremonial burial in the Karacaahmet Cemetary on July 17th. When the grave was removed due to road construction his remains were moved to a grave (without an inscription) in the enclosed graveyard of Bayezid Mosque.
In a ceremony held on the 13th July 2007 on the 80th anniversary of his death, his monumental tomb and inscription designed by architect Can Çinici and architect Zeynep Mennan were installed upon the initiative of the Chamber of Architects and with the support of the General Directorate of Foundations.
